Bike to Melbourne Airport

Has anyone cycled to the Melbourne Airport?

We would like to go to te Melbourne airport by train and bike to fly home with our bikes. Any suggestions which train station to go to and how to ride there? We have seen a sign at the Western ring road that said Airport west - is this where we need to go? Also I saw on the map that the Moonee Ponds Creek bike path goes near the ariport, but it was very confusing when we went on it.

Happy holidays ect.

Not the easiest thing to do Major.

Your nearest station is probably Broadmeadows.

From there ride west on Johnstone St / Broadmeadows Rd and then left into Mickleham. If you look at Google maps you'll see you can run through the suburbs and come out on Mickleham close to the Tullamarine Freeway. I wouldn't contemplate riding on the freeway. This part of the ride is a bit hilly - long, but not steep.

Ride under the freeway and then turn right and go through suburban streets, with a view to getting to Melrose Drive. Melrose Drive will get you to the airport. This is flat riding. Near the airport you'll come across the taxi waiting parking bays and the hire car deports; 'warning, warning, warning'.

All these roads are pretty busy, so if you're not confident don't contemplate it. Nor can I vouch for the quality of the roads / shoulders as it is many years since I rode this part of Melbourne.

Where are you coming from?

A great deal of the Moonee Ponds Creek path parallels the Broadmeadows trainline, so you can take either.

Train it to Pascoe Vale station, ride down Gaffney St directly onto the MPC bike path, eventually turn off at Mascoma St, heading towards Melrose Drive.

OR

Follow the MPC path all the way from the city and again get off at Mascoma St, then jump on Melrose Drive.

Bike to Melbourne Airport

Hi All

Sorry for the late reply, forgot I posted this question.

Yeah we did it on the hot day that was the 2nd of Jan if I recall. There was no shade. I can't remember the name of the train station we got off at, but the ride went well with the help of a guidebook. The end of the trail we used comes out next to the fuel depot. Once you past the fuel you rode by a Maccas and then bam you were at the terminal.

The last several K are off road and hard to follow with a couple of fences to go through. It was a nice way to get there inspite of the heat, and uncertainty. We will do again.

Cheers
