What's your favourite climb and why?

Quote: BruceGray

Been walking up the Goat Track a bit recently. Here's one pic which I hope backs why I don't think the road will be open to cars for a long time, if ever. It isn't so much the landslides from above that would be costly to fix, but underpinning and stablizing the slides on the downside...

I also walked the full ascending length of Mt Glorious Rd last week, and there's several sections that will cost a few million to stabilize.

Those Goat Track photos are astounding. Looks more like a neglected Columbian back road twisting through the Andes. How long does the walk take you?

Mt Baw Baw - 12 km

Too painful to call it a favourite it is the hardest I have experienced...

The Race

After 90 km of racing it was an amazing feeling just getting to the top.

Potts Ln, Upper Brookfield is the ultimate climb. Kudos to anyone who can climb this beast! it averages 27% and maxes out at 31% and goes for a bit less then a 1km. It is a single lane road which weaves out of the brookfield valley. I have never seen a car attempt to go up it. An absolute monster. Only part of the road is mapped on google maps but you can see it on satellite mode.

Has anyone tried Head Rd/Spring Ck Rd that goes up the Main Range towards Killarney from the Fassifern Valley? Looks like a pretty nice road - spectacular views too if google streetview is anything to by.

yep 4km first stretch then 2km pull up to the spring creek cafe. both 15-20%. 100km return from boonah.

challenging and normally have the hill to yourself

Well, I climbed the Tourmelet on Monday, and whilst it had all the romance and history attached to it, Hotham is still my favourite climb. For a Hors climb, i was expecting it to be tougher than it was. The descent down the other side was pretty awesome though, and if it hadnt been for all the campervan traffic claiming their spot for thursdays stage I would have cracked 100 without trying.

Which side of the Tourmalet did you do Juscruzin? I did it last year from Luz St Saveur and the descent down to St Marie de Campon was fantastic. I agree though whilst it had a lot of history etc etc there are many other climbs I have enjoyed more. I remember it as being long but steady and you were able to find a rythym and keep it. It was certainly tough, although we had already done the Col de Marie Blanque and the Aubisque earlier that day which are Cat 1 and Hors so the legs were running out of juice. It was also quite eery as there were a few afternoon thunderstorms around and it was very cold and hardly anyone on the mountain by the time I got there. I felt like I was all by myself for about the last 10 kms of the climb.

Monday I went up the Barege side and down the bagneres side. Today i went up in the same directon the tour took and back down the same way. I think the Barege side is harder. I have to say the i had an awesome time at the top today ! Witnessing what is the spectacle of Le Tour on one of ite queen summits.

Great experience Justcruzin. Are you part of a group or are have you organised the trip yourself?

I was thinking about going to the tour next year and then doing some climbs after, but not with an organised group. I did the etape a couple of years back, but was in Ventou. I found the crowds good and bad. Hard to decend & then get food - traffic and cafes etc full. Great atmosphere off the bike though.

Good luck with the rest of your trip.

We are organised our own trip. We hired a Gite for a week and did our own thing. It was really easy and having done it this way I wouldnt even consider an organised trip in the future. Contact me early August I can give you some pointers.

My favourite climb? No climb will ever be a favourite, the latest one to beat me up was Lochinvar Rd at Upper Kedron, it eventually becomes McLean Road (or something like that, google it you'll find it) you follow Camp Mountain Road around & eventually end up at Samford, the return trip was Eatons Crossing Road then Bunya Road (Bunya Road is hell on expensive climbing wheels).

I'm a terrible climber, I dread the damn things so I like to punish myself by doing it (na I ain't getting any better but maybe just maybe one day..........), that one is my current challenge.

I think I have decided that the north side of Mt Mee is my most UNfavourite climb. Whilst this hill is nothing really by itself, i have never done it with less than 100k and 1000m already in my legs. Yesterdays effort with 160k and nearly 3000m before hitting it really made me start to wonder what the fascination with hills is all about. It broke 2 of my riding buddies.

Nearly broke the 3rd too Smile My most UNfavourite climb too. Both times I have done it with over 150k in the legs and mid afternoon which even at this time of year is not the most pleasent time to be on the biike.

Conversley the more normal route up Mt Mee from Dayboro is one of my favourites.

Last weekend I rode what could be my actual favourite. The climb to Eungella in Mackay. Its quite short but steep. It climbs 360m in just under 4k with about 5 cattle grids and tight switchbacks to add to the challenge. Standard gearing with an 11/23 cluster not the ideal combination. The view from the top makes it worth the effort.

Eungella View

The local cycling and running clubs do a KOM event each year. I might time my visit with the family next year to coincide with it Smile

Looks like a fun diversion on the way to Glorious - sort of...

There's a link somewhere on Roadgrime to a video a couple of guys took of one of them riding up it. Quite ridiculous really as a climb.
